What is Wireless Internet

Wireless Internet refers to two different service types.  This can refer to Internet service over cell phone networks or to Internet service off of a nearby wireless router.  Either way it is called wireless because there is no need for a wire to connect your computer to receive the Internet service.

Wireless Hot Spots are usually coffee shops or airports which have Internet service that can be picked up by local patrons who have a wireless access card in their laptop or mobile device.  These companies usually connect their wired service such as DSL, cable Internet or broadband Internet connection to a wireless router.  Many of them offer this service free of charge to patrons.

One of the biggest misconception is with a wireless internet you can connect anywhere. This is not true, how wireless internet works is by  a series of towers that transmit Internet signals in the same fashion as cell phone. This a  costly endeavor and
the two most common type of wireless providers are nationwide WISPs and Local WISPs.

The nationwide WISPs are worldwide and they are usually in heavy population areas. You will find these in airports, hotels, Starbucks and it is getting increasing popular. You see many business adverting they have WiFi which mean they have a nationwide WISPs provider.

Local WISPs covers a specific, city or group of towns. You will find this wireless internet in remote areas some time where there are no DSL Internet or Cable Internet.

Requirements for a Wireless Internet

To get wireless Internet you will need the following:

  • A laptop computer running Windows 98, XP or vista. Instead of a laptop you could use a Smart phone or a PDA to access the internet

  • A wireless Internet provider in your area. A "sniffer" software is usually included in your plan to located various hot spot locations.

  • A Ethernet card or a USB port with a Ethernet adaptor.
