The High Speed Internet Source

What is High Speed Internet DSL

High Speed Internet DSL usually ranges in speed from 256Kbps to about 10Mbps.  The Fastest DSL services usually cost a few hundred USD depending on the location.  Most locations only have DSL up to about a maximum of 3Mbps.  Most companies consider any DSL faster than 1Mbps to be high speed DSL.

Always remember that DSL Internet service is a service that is shared through a DSLAM at the local CO (Central Office) of the ISP or phone company.  This service is not usually as reliable as a T1, T3, OC3, OC12, OC48, or a GigE Internet port.  These "real" broadband high speed Internet solutions tend to be much faster and more reliable.

The two most common high speed Internet  services are High Speed DSL Internet and Cable. Cable High Speed Internet Service, for many years, has claimed they are faster and it has been a highly debated topic. It is hard to gauge who is the faster because DSL offers 144 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps and the cable download speeds are 2 times faster than 1.5 Mbps but cable shares it bandwidth and it hard to gauge a exact download speed. With High Speed DSL you are not sharing broadband but how far you are from the central telephone company hub and the conditions of the telephone lines can affect the speed.

How High Speed DSL Internet Works

When you hook up to a High Speed DSL Internet your telephone lines become the medium for your voice and your Internet. These telephone wires can hold very large capacity and very little is used in phone calls. The line is shared by the two connections and the information is kept separate, so the signals do not cross.  All signals under 4 Khz are voice signals, everything over is High Speed DSL Internet.

Different Types of High Speed DSL Internet

  • HDSL - the earliest version has a speed up to 1.544 Mbps.

  • ADSL - Speed generally range from 512 Kbps to 6 Mbps.

  • SDSL  - speeds max at 3 Mbps.

  • VDSL - Very high  range from 13 Mbps to 56 Mbps.

DSL High Speed Internet and a T1 connection both offer high speed connections, but the functions and the features are significantly different. TI is much faster and usually offer by highly secure colocation center or data center. These companies usually offer backup power and offers a very safe place for your data.

We have explain how DSL High Speed Internet works above and so how does T1 line work. T1 lines use 23 channels with pulse code modulation signals that work digitally. It is incredible fast, and it has very large capacity, many computers can be connected without affecting the speed. Because of the expense, usually T1 are used in larger businesses and schools and the DSL High Speed Internet is used in small business and homes.
